Emergency Contraception
EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION PILLS (ECPs)
What are ECPs?
ECPs contain hormones that reduce the risk of pregnancy if started within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse. The intervention is most effective the closer to unprotected intercoarse it begins. ECPs work best when given mid cycle around the time of ovulation. Plan B is currently the only product marketed specifically as emergency contraception. Certain oral contraceptives, Birth Control Pills, taken in increased doses may also be used as ECPs and have been in use for decades widely under many different regimens. |
